There is an abundant source of energy in the form of sunlight beaming down upon your rooftop every day. It can be used as a clean, cheap, and reliable energy source. Solar power can have an immediate benefit upon your home and family. Wouldn’t you like to save money and energy, and be less dependent upon your local utility company? Solar panels have an investment return within months, not years. Best of all, you can be in charge of your family’s energy source, not the utility company. It is very affordable to build your own solar panels, as opposed to buying them. As making ends meet becomes more of a challenge, instead of cutting back on expenses, do something that results in having more money on hand.

We need to lose the idea that being self-sufficient means sacrificing comfort. That to embrace the idea you have to produce everything you need yourself. That you can’t get started unless you have all the space, funds and desire to just drop out of society and isolate yourself. That the philosophy is, and can only be, embraced by “hippies”. Who have become so idealistically green that they have forgotten that the world is so over populated that it is impossible for it to be sustainable for all of us to join them, and have made the idea unpopular by the way they look down their nose at the rest of us.

There is just no question that our destiny will include a majority of renewable energy. We could include here a big, long list of renewable and power supplier technologies that we can utilize. But the important thing to remember is that all of us are going to have to find our way with products that suit us and our lifestyle. The desert does not have the same needs and resources as the beach. Or the deep south with its great heat. The north with its terribly severe winters. Not a great deal of similarity between the needs of those places.

Shop locally. Clothing made in the United States or, better yet, your hometown, reduces the amount of energy needed to ship that garment to your neighborhood store. And you’re supporting the local economy.

Since you don’t have to leave society and are still earning money it just takes a matter of time to replace everything with energy-efficient products and end even add energy producing technology to your house.

While hydropower seems like a slam dunk option as an energy platform, there are a few definite negatives. The initial cost of building a hydropower dam can be very large. Hundreds of millions of dollars can be required. Larger projects such as the Three Gorges dam run into the billions. These figures are staggering for smaller countries and even give pause to most first world ones. With the rising costs of fossil fuels, however, this is becoming less of an issue each and every day.

Private developers-Private developers who want to make a good investment can also capitalize off biomass. When you pick the right setting, you can build a fully functional biomass power plant. Once it’s all completed, you sell it to someone else who is in the business of running them. You make a profit. They get the plant they wanted. Everyone stands to gain.

There are also many means of building and creating your own form of renewable energy, such as solar panels, wind generators, and micro hydropower. A lot of these can be done for little money, and help create energy on smaller scales.
