The Office of the United Nations Secretary-General’s Envoy for Youth recently issued a call for action to increase the amount of women in their teens who are involved in politics. At present young women comprise less than one percent of parliamentarians a fact that undercuts their important contributions to future generations. What can young women do to reverse this trend? Here are some examples. Let’s take a closer glance. In short, women can make a difference in the world of politics by taking part in public debates, taking leadership roles, and taking on responsibility for their countries.
Gender analysis can help policymakers and advocates understand why women aren’t represented in the leadership positions in politics. In some countries, the primary reason isn’t patriarchal dynamics however, it is the intersection of various other vectors of social exclusion and political exclusion. It isn’t clear which of these causes are the primary reason behind inequality. Women’s leadership in politics is an essential aspect of achieving equality in politics, and it should be given a high priority.
The Women in Parliament Summit (WPL) brings women politicians from around the world to engage in a global conversation. These events are held each quarter and reflect the perspectives and opinions of women who are in decision-making positions. For the inaugural WPL Summit, held in the European Parliament in 2013, the theme was “Advancing Society.” Participants included Prime Ministers from Norway, Finland, and Malta and the OECD’s Deputy Secretary-General Mari Kiviniemi.
Both the global and national governments must encourage policies and practices that support women’s political leadership. These strategies should not rely on the outdated paradigm of gender stereotypes. Instead, they should consider the complicated connection between democracy and political participation for women. U.S. policymakers can build on previous initiatives and integrate gender-based considerations into all their policies to promote gender equality. The greater the social impact and the more women are included in the political process.
The United States is no exception to this trend. 2018 saw women serving as heads of state, ministers, or parliamentarians. This trend is continuing with female elected officials in the U.S., including President Joe Biden, who was the first woman to be elected vice president. Biden’s administration has also appointed more cabinet members of women than any previous president. It’s not a coincidence that women have made huge strides in the field of political leadership. Despite this trend more women are in the executive branches of our nation than ever before.
In addition to political participation, IRI works to increase women’s role in society. It also promotes gender equity through social change in men’s perceptions of women. Without changes in the social environment and political change, it is unlikely to be possible. If these two elements are coupled by political change women will stand an increased chance of being represented in the political sphere. Therefore, it is essential to take the necessary steps to ensure equality of gender in politics. IRI also supports inclusive policies, gender equality and equal representation in all areas.
The United Nations established a Democracy Cohort for Women as a result of these accomplishments. This group will focus on empowering women’s political participation. The Democracy Cohort will work closely with women leaders to assist them implement reforms and assess their progress in fulfilling their commitments. This cohort has been approved by the United Nations and will continue to collaborate with them during the Summit for Democracy’s Year of Action.
In China, women’s political representation has decreased from 25 percent in 1975 to 10.9 percent in 2018. In 2002, the percentage of women elected as county and city directors and mayors fell below 10 percent. The reasons for these results can be attributed to the patriarchal structure as well as the legacy of socialism, and patriarchal structures. Chinese women face numerous obstacles in gaining political office and taking on leadership roles after being elected. This study also highlights how important it is to empower women in patriarchal societies.
The majority of Americans believe that women in leadership positions in the United States are better than men in certain areas. Seventy-one percent of women believe that female politicians are more compassionate and empathy than their male counterparts. A majority of Americans believe that women politicians are more adept in dealing with health issues than men. However, women are perceived as more adept at managing key economic policy issues.
Despite these problems there are women who believe that voters don’t want to elect women to high positions. They tend to blame gender discrimination and unequal expectations as the main causes of women’s political underrepresentation in politics. This view is shared by many males.
